Cllr Sue Lent

I was persuaded to stand for election as a County Councillor in 1989. I moved to my current address in Plasnewydd ward in 1982 and by 1989 had been involved in many local campaigns including for nursery provision and against Post Office closures. I was also a School Governor at Roath Park Primary School where I was a parent. I was delighted to be successful and enthusiastic to serve my local community.

During the next 15 years I combined my role as a Councillor with working part time as a Child Care Social Worker and being a mother to my three children. I have always been passionate about children and was soon involved in setting up the first After School Club in Plasnewydd. I continued to serve as a Governor at Roath Park and also joined Albany Primary. We achieved many improvements to road safety in the area and were always active on behalf of residents.

Since returning to the Council in 2012 I have achieved a great deal on behalf of residents alongside my ward colleagues. I’m particularly proud that we were successful in our campaign to ban the unsightly letting boards which were a real blight on our neighbourhood. I’m also pleased that it was we as Labour Councillors who introduced the 20mph trial to large parts of Plasnewydd and that we have brought in the Landlord Licensing Scheme and the recent Supplementary Planning Guidance on Houses of Multiple Occupation.

In early 2013 I became chair of Roath Park Primary School Governing Body. This is a role which I enjoy immensely and to which I give a great deal of commitment. I also chair the Governing Body of the new Howardian Primary School, a school which is developing year by year into a fine local school.

In May 2014 I became Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council. My Cabinet portfolio is “Early Years, Children and Families”. I have brought my long experience as a Social Worker to the role and have overseen huge improvements in Children’s Services. We had a good inspection of the service in 2015 and are officially rated as the “most improved Social Services Department in Wales”
